Description
Clickers, as part of a Student Response System, have been used to create motivation and engage students in the classroom (Blasco-Arcas et al., 2013). However, there are issues of functionality, cost and class room organisation that can cause problems (Kay & LeSage, 2009) and, from experience, use by lecturers is limited because of the overhead of preparing for a class and organising the response systems during the lesson. In addition, questions are often restricted to a multiple choice format, and there is limited (if any) facility for the input of free text.
Over the past two years a web based system has been developed to allow students to use their own mobile device (laptop, tablet or smartphone) to replace the clicker and staff to use a browser linked to a projector to control the questions and display results. The system is installed on a web server and a unique web address generated for each session and each question. These can be presented as links in a VLE, PowerPoint or an automatically created QR code.
To create questions and control a session staff need to log in to the system but it is simple enough for questions to be created quickly in their own office or in the class room. Questions can be multiple choice or open ended text. In the classroom staff can display one or more questions on a web page via a projector and use their own mobile device to control the display. Students can access a version of the page on their own device to respond anonymously (or authenticated if via a secure intranet). The results can then be viewed from links to another webpage for discussion and analysis.
The system has been used in various classes (25 – 80 students in a class) in the last year. This has ranged from encouraging group discussion and feedback to getting students to answer exam questions in class. One use has been to get feedback from the class on the pace of the lecture. This was helpful with students who were reluctant to lose face by admitting that they were struggling. It has also been used outside the classroom: to post questions before the lecture for discussion at the lecture and to give questions to be completed after the lecture.
In the first half of the session we will talk about the issues we have had to deal with and the different ways it has been used. In the second half of the session we will demonstrate and ask attendees to use the system and give feedback. Please bring your wireless device to use in the demonstration.

Just thought today, I should have suggested you download a QR code reader if you intend to use a mobile phone in my session as it saves typing. I use qr droid on my android .
