Description
This paper is focused on the roll-out of electronic management of assessment (EMA) at Goldsmiths, University of London.
Online assessment has for a number of years been quite well embedded in Goldsmiths, with near universal adoption in some departments. However, in one or two, it has yet to make a significant impact.
This paper will provide an outline of the experiences of the TEL team over the last year in building upon these early successes to promote institution-wide take-up of EMA in accordance with the current Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy.
Specifically, it will touch on the following:
- The use of a Goldsmiths framework adapted from the Heads of eLearning Forum 2013 EMA survey and Jisc’s Electronic Assessment Management report;
- The importance of senior management support;
- The value of learning and teaching committees, departmental champions and pilot projects;
- Looking to the future – video submission, assessment and feedback.
The speaker will share with the audience aspects of the EMA strategy that have worked well but also the significant challenges that are still being faced. It will draw upon a January 2014 snapshot report written by the Unit on take-up of EMA and some of the issues encountered with implementation.
The paper will conclude that an institutional EMA strategy must be flexible and adaptable for different assessment types and individuals. Emphasising the contextual benefits to the different stakeholders and providing prompt TEL support are crucial.
