There has been a major push and significant investment in the direction of Open Educational Resource (OER) and Open Educational Practice (OEP) over the last decade in the UK. As expanding educational markets has become more pressing, OER activities are becoming widely used by many UK institutions as a means of marketing – to increase institutional recognition and attract students to specific courses of study through ‘tasters’ (McGill et al., 2013). Against this backdrop, the University of Northampton funded the Open Northampton project (http://www.northamptonilt.com/open-northampton), which aims to release high quality, properly licensed learning and teaching content into open repositories to enhance Northampton’s presence on the global OER map.
The project aligns with and will impact directly on the following aspects of Northampton’s Strategic Plan:Enhancing student experience and satisfaction; Achieving financial sustainability; Maximising Northampton’s visibility globally; Enhancing Northampton’s links and partnership opportunities with public, private and third-sector organisations.
Open Northampton operates in two phases. An evaluation of the project will be conducted at each phase to ensure there is the alignment between deliverables and the project’s objectives. Phase1 (August 2013 – July 2014): At least one OER from each subject area will be released into JORUM (http://www.jorum.ac.uk) by July 2014. The materials vary in sizes and formats, including teaching units (in Word or PDF), lecture presentations (in PowerPoint or PDF), video clips, audio clips, assessment/learning activities, and other types of materials. Materials in specific disciplines are being piloted in the form of a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course). Phase2 (August 2014 – July 2015): On the basis of a critical mass of OERs created in Phase 1, the formal or informal delivery of MOOCs will spread across schools and levels.
An evaluation of Phase 1 of the project will be conducted during July-August 2014, mainly with the academics who have contributed materials to the Open Northampton project. The evaluation will take the form of personal interviews with these academics and will explore the issues around their perceived challenges and concerns over open practices and the impact of openness on their teaching practice.
In this presentation we will share results from Phase 1 of the project which will include the following areas: An overview of the materials released into JORUM as OERs (including topic, subject area, format, size, numbers of views and downloads), challenges encountered in the project (such as copyright issues around the use of artworks), and the plan to take the project forward.
