The concept of the ‘digital university’ is being widely debated within the Higher education sector, becoming embedded in educational policy and, beginning to be explored in many institutions. Whilst there is still not commonly understood definition of how a digital university differs from current practice and long established conventions, there is an underlying assumption that the “digital” is crucial to the success of any 21st Century University.

Over the past 18 months, the Digital Futures Working Group at Edinburgh Napier University has conducted a wide ranging review and intensive staff and student consultation exercise to develop a set of recommendations and actions to engage and direct the institution’s digital developments. A starting point for developing themes for the group to explore was the Conceptual Matrix for the the Digital University (MacNeill/Johnston, 2012). Based on theses experiences Glasgow Caledonian University are currently undertaking a similar exercise.

This presentation will share:

the background to the project,
the experience of the now completed project,
the methodologies involved to engage with staff and students,
the recommendations identified through the consultation exercise.

It will then compare and contrast how this experience has been shared and adapted for another university context.
