Description
-Is there a risk of assuming that technology enhances learning without really knowing whether it does?
-What are the capabilities of technology for education?
-What are the connections between capabilities of technology and pedagogy?
-What tools, technologies and resources are appropriate?
-We will consider the barriers and enablers to the support and adoption of TEL as a pedagogy in designing and delivering education.
-We will seat delegates around tables, encouraging those from the same institution to work together.
After a brief introduction to our project and the associated pedagogy, we will give each table two hypotheses to consider.
Hypotheses will be in plain English – examples might be: ‘Preparing good eLearning takes time and universities are usually reticent to resource it’ or ‘I can see benefits to TEL, but I don’t know what they are.’ Participants will be able to choose themes which are most relevant to their practice. We will then facilitate small-group discussions.
After twenty minutes of discussion, we will summarise the issues and responses. We will then invite delegates to consider the issues further and consult or contribute to the project blog. This will meet the workshop’s objectives by exposing all participants to the full range of barriers and enablers, while also allowing people to contribute to areas of particular interest or relevance to them.
We think that a participative workshop is the most powerful way to handle these issues because there is no single, best solution to developing and using TEL in each university. Indeed, individual academics need to apply this thinking to best suit the needs of their students, the facilities available in their university, and their own preferences and practice.

I will be chairing this session Ann. Looking forward to discussion around a range of interesting questions and challenges to technology enabled learning.

I enjoyed the session given by Steve (sorry to hear about why Ann could not be there). There was certainly a buzz of discussion and conversation in sharing experiences of barriers and enablers of encouraging technology enabled learning – recognising similar issues regardless of institution. Steve did a sterling job in engaging us all in the…[Read more]
