In 2014 the innovation network of the Fontys University of Applied Science plotted the Social Engaged Action Learning (SEAL) model in a number of experiments. Seal is a form of action learning in which students from the start are challenged to participate actively and engaged in education. This is done by using actual work related problems and issues from actual partners in the field for students to solve by developing professional products, or students choose their own issue to solve. SEAL has three phases to engage in with groups of up to 5 students but at their own pace.
Phase 1: Examine
Starting the first phase, the students explore and think threw which issues they want to address. They use whatever source they can find to think up an issue to solve. The phase ends in a self-directed assignment with is presented as an “illustration”. This is a powerful image in which the problem to be solved is represented. Issues that are addressed by student vary with the field in with they are educated. In the department for ICT students study the possibility to secure the network of a company. The issue studied by students of the HRM-studies was: “How can Phillips engage more highly educated female workers?” and “What can this company do to improve the image as a excellent employer?”
Phase 2: Conceptualize
During this phase, the students study all available sources and literature in order to clarify the issue and the solution mentioned earlier. The main focus of the students is to find evidence concerning their topic, proving the problem exists and to find theoretical basis and models that can be used to solve it. This phase ends in the presentation of a “Big Idea”. A view on the most powerful solution to the issue.
Phase 3: Produce
During the last phase, the students set them self’s to produce the proposed solution. The phase ends in the final product that is presented in the form of a “showcase”. Students often come up with innovative and creative solutions. Students of HRM developed an app for the iPhone in with you can apply for a job. Every student thinks up an individual story connecting the phases in a so called learning journey. This is a representation of the student’s individual activities, insights and learning outcomes.
Within the iFontys network the authors of the model are engaged in the search for an appropriate ICT support that can support the student to shape the connecting story. This story is the result of the student’s experiences, insights, failures and success while working on the product. Students are invited to use a scrapbook in with they collect all experiences, thoughts and ideas. The result of all notes, pictures and elements is the representation of the learning journey. Currently the network is running an experiment with a software program called “Project Campus” to support the students process. This program, having the look and feel of Facebook, gives students and teachers the opportunity to share all kind of information, give feedback and work together. As an experiment students were given access to the environment of “Project Campus” without a single logon facility and no instruction on how to use the software. After a period of ten weeks, student all engaged in sharing information and giving feedback by using “Project Campus”. Overall students and teachers were enthusiastic on the use of the software.
The submission is part of the theme learners as agents of change and Participatory approaches to the development of learning technologies. During a presentation we like to elaborate the SEAL-model, share experiences, findings using the model in our organization and have a dialogue with the participants on the possibilities to support the Learning journey. Therefor we use the Fontys model for ICT architecture and a model for supporting student activities during the learning journey. Participants will learn about the model and be able to tribute on the possibilities for IT support.
