Venue and travel

The conference will be held at the University of Manchester on the Oxford Road campus. A map of the campus can be downloaded here (the conference venue is at University Place, number 37 on the map).

Travel to the University of Manchester (Oxford Road campus)

By train

The University of Manchester is located close to both Piccadilly main line station (about two and a half hours from London) and Oxford Road train station, with Victoria train station a little further away.

Piccadilly station to Oxford Road campus

The Oxford Road Link bus (no 147) runs from Piccadilly Rail Station across the campus stopping at 14 locations and finishing at Grafton Street. This service runs on weekdays between 7.15am and 6.45pm, at 10-minute intervals, and can be caught from the Fairfield Street entrance to Piccadilly Station.

A taxi from Piccadilly Station to the Oxford Road area of the campus will cost you about £5.

Oxford Road station to Oxford Road campus

To get to the Oxford Road area of the campus, go down the station approach to Oxford Road and turn right. The campus is a ten to fifteen minute walk. Alternatively, buses stop outside the Palace Hotel.

By car

Directions to the Oxford Road campus from major routes can be found here. Parking is available nearby at the NCP Aquatic Centre: http://www.ncp.co.uk/car-park?cpid=901068 The car park is a few minutes walk from the venue and operates a pay station system. Opening times are 6am-11pm and cars can be left overnight (although you will not be able to go in or out between 11pm and 6am). Please note that ALT will be unable to issue delegates with permits for on-site parking.

By coach and bus

National Express coaches serve over 1,200 destinations across the UK from the Chorlton Street Coach Station, which is near Piccadilly railway station and a short walk from both University campuses. To get to the Oxford Road campus turn right out of Chorlton Street Coach Station onto Chorlton Street and walk to the junction with Whitworth Street. The 147 Oxford Road link bus runs from Whitworth Street to several locations on the Oxford Road campus.

By air

Manchester Airport is one of the largest and busiest in the country. It is located about 10 miles (16km) south of the city centre, about 30 minutes from the university.

The airport has a number of transport links to the city:

  • Train – The airport’s two terminals are linked directly to the city centre by a fast, frequent 24 hour train link to both Piccadilly and Oxford Road stations.
  • Taxi – A taxi from the airport to the University will cost approximately £15.
  • Bus – Local buses also run to the Oxford Road and Sackville Street areas of the campus.
