). The technology has enabled the traditional lecture style delivery mode to continue, but in a digital reusable format, that facilitates a more flexible approach to learning and teaching (Hall and Ivaldi, 2017).
Recent changes in Disabled Students’ allowances (DSA) have also prompted further investigation on the use of lecture capture to help support students by providing learning content in an accessible and digital form. This was recently discussed on the 2017 edition of the New Media Consortium Horizon Report Higher Education Edition (NMC, 2017) and increasingly continues to be an evolving technology to support inclusivity in student learning.
However, introducing a technology such as lecture capture can be a challenge, both from a staff engagement aspect and ensuring pedagogical sound practice in academic content and use.
In 2015, Plymouth University began a pilot project to implement a lecture capture system Panopto across the institution.
This session will summarise the engagement and implementation from a learning technology perspective including:
- the journey from implementation of training and support to business as usual
- building student and staff engagement with the system
- the question of the use of lecture capture to support changes to disabled student allowance funding including pros and cons
In addition, the session will include some case studies of practice and implementation during the pilot, focusing on the stakeholder perspective of student retention and participation with the generated learning material when compared with the traditional methods of lecture and content dissemination used in the institution.
