Description
This poster presentation explores a range of pedagogic and professional functions in the use of Mahara at Rose Bruford College of Theatre and Performance; and poses a series of administrative/legal questions which arise as e-portfolios become more firmly embedded in teaching and learning at the College. This extends to the use of e-portfolios by distance learners carrying out primary, practical research and the way in which Mahara can be used to pool personalised situated learning in a shared online space (and therefore addresses the Learning Spaces conference theme). As such, the e-portfolio “promotes self-revision through participation in assessment of other students’ learning” (Barbera 2008). This poster also explores the use of Mahara for archiving/sharing/curating work at a professional standard for students many of whom are, in effect, early-career practitioners, e.g. as a first professional website for employability purposes (Fitch, Peet, Reed, and Toman, 2008). It discusses the use of Mahara as a site for peer to peer learning and support. For new students arriving at the College, induction and training in the use of the e-portfolio has the added function of raising awareness of IP/copyright issues, together with digital responsibility and the beginnings of online self-marketing. Finally, although Mahara broadens the palette of assessment opportunities, the question of how to lock/export and archive portfolios as a long-term legal requirement represents a question and a challenge to the ALT community and further afield.
