Description
Since 2013, the Research & Education Space project has been working with teachers, students and academics, along with curators of world class digital collections and product developers to improve the resources and tools available in all levels of education.
The BBC has built an open platform which indexes and organises the digital collections of libraries, museums, broadcasters and galleries to make their content more discoverable, accessible and usable to those in UK education and research. Images, TV and radio programmes, documents and text from world class organisations such as The British Museum, British Library, The National Archives, Europeana, Wellcome Trust and the BBC are all being indexed by RES. RES also enables developers to create digital educational products that will inspire learners, teachers and researchers by using applications powered by the RES platform. The open platform makes useful and intelligent links between data sources to enrich the learning experience.
The talk will describe the benefits of publishing data and media in a ‘RES Friendly’ manner and the opportunities that the platform offers to educational product developers and existing educational technology services. It will outline the reasons that RES was developed, the research that helped shape the project’s aims and objectives, along with the desired outcomes. It will describe seven problems with using the internet for research, teaching and learning and offer the RES solutions to these problems, and why they matter to collection holders, curators, product developers, researchers, learners and educators.
A number of products have been built on the RES platform to meet various user needs and this session will give you the chance to interact with products that are powered by RES, give you an opportunity to offer thoughts on and ask questions about its future development, and provide information as to how collection holders, product developers, teachers and learners can work together to make the RES platform the new norm.
The talk will last 20 minutes. It will explore how the emergent Linked Open Data technology can empower learners and educators, and discuss how this technology opens up opportunities for improving research through access to data and cultural heritage media and documents.
Examples will be provided of RES in use, offering feedback from users, and will demonstrate some prototype products that are built on the platform.
