We look forward to welcoming you to ALT’s 25th  Annual Conference 2018. With a packed programme, ~400 participants from across the globe, we look forward to coming together as a community from across sectors. The hashtag for the event is #altc.

Our 25th conference has taken 18 months of planning led by Conference Co-Chairs, Sheila and Martin.  We have also receive great support from our sponsors, exhibitors and many  fabulous Members and volunteers.

This email contains important information to help you make the most of your time at this year’s conference. Please read it carefully.

Conference website and programme

The conference has a dedicated website and we encourage you to browse the conference timetable before attending at:

At registration you will receive a printed Conference Programme Guide which includes session titles and other useful information.

The dedicated website also includes features to help you plan your conference and connect with other participants. The website is publicly accessible, to use the advanced features you need to login using your ALT Membership or conference registration credentials.  If you did not register yourself or don’t know your username you can request a new password/username at and if you require further assistance you can email

Registration and pre-conference activities

The Registration Desk is within University Place on the ground floor named ‘The Drum’.

Early registration will be open from 17.00 to 19.00 on Monday 10 September. Registration is open from  08:30-09:30 during the conference. Please wear your badge throughout the conference (you are liable to be challenged by conference helpers, University staff, or ALT personnel if you do not wear it).

Arriving early? Take part in our pre-conference walking tour of Manchester commencing at 3pm.  The walking tour will finish by 5pm at the conference venue where you can register and everyone who is arriving early is welcome to meet up at nearby KRO Bar at 325 Oxford Road for an informal gathering.

Travel & Accommodation

The Annual Conference takes place at the University of Manchester, University Place, Oxford Road, M13 9PL. The main campus is close to the city centre. You can find directions and travel information on the conference website.

Manchester has a wealth of accommodation a list of which has been compiled on the platform.

Getting connected at #altc – WiFi details

Internet access is provided throughout the conference venue. This is a shared service so please be mindful of usage and avoid downloading large attachments or using video streaming services. Details on gaining WiFi access are included below

Guest Wifi (UoM WiFi)

Delegates are entitled to free WiFi access on the University of Manchester network. Usernames and passwords are distributed as part of registration. To gain access:

  1. Search for available wireless networks and connect to ‘UoM_WiFi’
  2. Once connected, open up your web browser and you will be re-directed to the log in page
  3. Click on the ‘Acceptable Use Policy’ box in the top left of the page
  4. This will bring down an area where you can enter your unique username and password. (please note that both username & password are case-sensitive)


The venue is covered by the Eduroam service. Eduroam is restricted to authorised institutions. If you have not used this service before please check with your host institution’s IT department regarding availability and any pre setup requirements.

Mobility or other requirements

University of Manchester, University Place, is fully accessible. If you have not previously notified us of any mobility, sensory, or access requirements, please contact a member of the conference team as soon as possible.

Code of conduct

ALT is dedicated to providing a harassment free conference experience for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment of conference participants in any form and we ask you to be courteous and considerate to your fellow attendees. We appreciate you may not agree with the ideas or views expressed by others and whilst we encourage debate we remind you that these discussions should remain civilised. By attending this event you are also bound by the regulations and code of conduct of the venue. Participants violating any of these rules will be expelled from the event without refund.
