Description
Session Description
The session will describe the open SPLOT (smallest possible learning online tool) titled the Compendium. It is a gamified tool that allows students to post anonymously about the issues they are facing in their learning journey. Lecturers can directly feedback via the tool to the students. Presentation of the research and the tool followed by an activity that invites the attendees to create a beastie to add to the Compendium.
Session content: evaluation and reflection
The session will present the open and free resource SPLOT (smallest possible learning online tool) titled Compendium of Bothersome Beasties (and how to deal with them!), for student self-reflection and formative feedback. The session will lead with a discussion on the design and methodology of how game attributes from the table-top role-playing game ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ was utilised to create a tool for facilitating student self-reflection and formative feedback in an engaging way. The presenters will show the pilot research and student feedback, and how the tool is being used by students on various modules and courses as part of their self-reflection studies. The presenters will then show how this was adapted from the pilot research and participatory design methods with the students to form the online version of the Compendium tool. Participants will be invited to ask questions and pose suggestions to develop the tool further and the session will end with an activity in which the participants will be tasked to create their own beastie to add to the Compendium. Finally, interested participants will be invited and shown how to use the tool for their own practice, and additional resources for support will be provided.
