Session Description

At the University of Wolverhampton we have deployed Canvas, our new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), and are in the first academic year of its roll out. Our previous in-house VLE (WOLF) was heavily integrated and heavily used, but not necessarily for the right reasons. Over the years it became an intranet, content repository, meeting management tool and was used for quality/validation purposes. Rather than just focusing on the new technology, we wanted to change the culture of how a new VLE could be used in our institution. We attempted to change the hearts and minds of our academics and focused on what they wanted to use a VLE for and not how they’ve always used it.

The presentation will outline the 3E framework (Enhance, Extend, Empower) by Smyth, K., Bruce, S., Fotheringham, J., & Mainka, C. (2012) and how institutions such as York St Johns, Keele and Plymouth Marjon University have all deployed it for their own needs. The main activity will revolve around participants being in groups:

– Firstly creating their own University landscape by selecting different attributes from a range of themes (student population, TEF rating, distance learning offering, etc.)
– Secondly, considering how they could develop and apply the 3E framework across their generated ‘factious’ University, including any potential activities, events and staff development plans. Each group will have the opportunity to feedback their findings as well share any personal experiences.

After groups have fed back, participants will discuss how they might deploy the 3E framework in their own institution and share these ideas.

Lastly we will showcase how the University of Wolverhampton has deployed the 3E framework, to enhance, extend and empower our academics in using the new VLE and our plans for the future. The audience will be exposed to a range of different experiences, activities and ideas and how they can adapt their different approaches to their own practice.

Session content: evaluation and reflection

The context of the workshop is based on the University of Wolverhampton’s transition from a highly integrated, in-house VLE (WOLF) to a commercially-produced VLE (Canvas) and how we use the 3E framework across our institution to change the culture of the University.

The workshop itself, has four main elements: presentation; activity; discussion; and feedback.

0-10 mins.
Presentation – University of Wolverhampton landscape, introduction to 3E framework and how other institutions have adapted it for their own needs.

10-15 mins
Activity – In groups, participants will pick attributes from the themes below to generate a ‘factious’ University landscape.
○ Student size
○ TEF rating
○ Distance learning offering
○ Time with VLE/ePortfolio
○ Strategic priorities

15-25 mins
Activity – Groups to consider how they would implement the 3E framework for the generated University landscape. This could include activities, strategic plans, policy change, etc.
Participants will be encouraged to write or draw their ideas in any way they see fit. (Resources will be provided.)

25-35 mins
Feedback – Each group feeds back to the other participants.

35-40 mins
Discussion – Pairs of participants will be asked to reflect and discuss how they would deploy the 3E framework in their own institutions, and consider whether they would use some of the activities previously outlined/created from the group activity, or whether other approaches could be used.

40-45 mins
Feedback – Each pair will be encouraged to share thoughts and ideas to the other participants.

45-55 mins
Presentation – How we have deployed the 3E framework across the University and our plans for the future.

55 – 60 mins
