Joining Instructions and Conference Guide

We look forward to welcoming you to ALT’s Annual Conference 2019. With a packed programme, ~450 participants from across the globe, we look forward to coming together as a community from across sectors. The hashtag for the event is #altc.

Our Conference has taken 18 months of planning led by Conference Co-Chairs, Melissa, Keith, and Louise.  We have also received great support from our sponsors, exhibitors and many fabulous Members and volunteers.

This page contains important information to help you with your conference planning but if you are short on time follow our quick links:

Getting to Edinburgh

Hopefully you have all your travel and accommodation sorted. For tips and advice for getting around Edinburgh and finding our venue (McEwan Hall, Teviot Place, Edinburgh, EH8 9AG) please refer to our Travel information and directions pages.

Registration and informal Monday meetup

Registration will be in the main reception of McEwan Hall, University of Edinburgh. Registration will be open for early sign in from 17:00 to 19:00 on Monday 2 September and each day during the conference from 08:30 to 09:30 (if you are arriving outside these this time you can pick up your badge during conference hours at our Helpdesk at the main reception of McEwan Hall). Please wear your badge throughout the conference as you are liable to be challenged by conference helpers, University staff, or ALT personnel if you do not wear it.

For those registering on Monday we are recommending Greenmantle Bar & Kitchen (44 W Crosscauseway, Edinburgh EH8 9JP) as an informal meeting point. Space has been reserved for attendees and there is a 10% discount by showing your conference badge, another good reason to go to pre-conference registration! For more details of this and other activities see the website for the full social programme.

What to wear?

We would describe the conference as smart/casual which includes the Gala Evening. If you would like to get a better sense of what this means you can browse pictures from last year on Flickr. As part of the social programme there is a Gala Evening and Awards Ceremony on Wednesday which also includes a ceilidh. The ceilidh is optional and if you intend to participate we recommend flat shoes and suitable clothing. The recent weather in Edinburgh has been very changeable, even by Scottish standards, and we recommend that you check weather forecasts before you travel.

Getting the most from your conference experience

With over 450 attendees, 150 sessions and 22 exhibitors we recommend you plan ahead. The conference has a dedicated website,, which you can log in, update your profile, connect with other logged in attendees and start building your own schedule. Late changes to the programme are listed online and updates will be added to session details.

At registration you will receive a printed Conference Programme Guide which includes session titles and other useful information such as cloakrooms and WiFi access.  You can also preview a downloadable PDF copy.

If you are on Twitter the conference hashtag is #altc and is another way to connect with those attending and participating remotely. Please share your planning tips and anything that you are particularly looking forward to with our community.

Guidance has already been circulated to lead authors. If you missed this we have published guidance for speakers and session chairs, which includes information about rooms, setting up, presenting and chairing sessions.
