Description
Session Description
Jisc is currently undertaking a discovery project into the topic of digital well-being and the main aim of the talk would be to share the outcomes from the project with the wider community. The talk is aimed at those interested in how staff and student physical and mental wellbeing is impacted by digital tools, services or practices.
The original definition of digital wellbeing from the Jisc Digital capability framework for individuals reads as “The capacity to look after personal health, safety, relationships and work-life balance in digital settings; to use digital tools in pursuit of personal goals (e.g. health and fitness) and to participate in social and community activities; to act safely and responsibly in digital environments; to negotiate and resolve conflict; to manage digital workload, overload and distraction; to act with concern for the human and natural environment when using digital tools. An understanding of the benefits and risks of digital participation in relation to health and wellbeing outcomes.”
We are looking to identify a shared vocabulary and reconsider the definition of ‘digital wellbeing’ now that the term is becoming more widely used. The discovery project hopes to clarify different elements or aspects of digital wellbeing to develop a clear idea of the scope and breadth of the concept and to help educational institutions to identify different aspects and consider how they might support staff and students to maintain their digital wellbeing.
The Jisc discovery project into digital wellbeing is reviewing the current practice in the sector. During the talk we will share examples of activities that are happening at various institutions across the UK and share what potential gaps we have identified. We will also share the next steps for the project.
