{"id":4058,"date":"2014-07-09T10:00:09","date_gmt":"2014-07-09T10:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsletter.alt.ac.uk\/?p=4058"},"modified":"2014-07-09T10:00:09","modified_gmt":"2014-07-09T10:00:09","slug":"event-report-canvas-by-instructure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/2014\/07\/event-report-canvas-by-instructure\/","title":{"rendered":"Event Report: Canvas by Instructure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-7\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E540\">\n<p id=\"E556\"><span id=\"E557\">On 21st May, <\/span><span id=\"E559\">Instructure<\/span><span id=\"E561\"> held an event at the ME Hotel on The Strand in London to celebrate the launch of the UK Canvas offices. Over 70 people primarily representing <\/span><span id=\"E563\">HE<\/span><span id=\"E565\"> and FE attended the event which aimed to introduce the UK market to what <\/span><a id=\"E566\" class=\"qowt-field qowt-field-hyperlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.canvasvle.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E567\">Canvas<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E568\"> can provide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E569\"><span id=\"E570\">The event opened with the history of how Canvas started &#8211; it was a computer science project at Brigham Young University to create a usable VLE. One of the key messages for the UK market was the commitment to the UK through a local UK team with development capabilities and the intention to make Canvas cater for the UK specific needs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"E571\"><span id=\"E572\">Canvas at the University of Birmingham<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"E575\">Matt Sherlock, University of <\/span><span id=\"E578\">Birmingham, presented the University&#8217;s recent VLE review process which led to their decision to adopt Canvas as the institutional VLE, replacing Blackboard&#8217;s <\/span><span id=\"E580\">WebCT<\/span><span id=\"E582\"> product. Usability was a key part of their review process, accounting for 20% of the final decision. Their reasons for choosing Canvas were based on a number of &#8216;-abilities&#8217; including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"E584\" style=\"font-style: italic\">Usability<\/span><span id=\"E585\">, meaning a lower barrier to adoption<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E587\">Modern, cloud based technology providing\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E588\" style=\"font-style: italic\">scalability<\/span><span id=\"E589\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E590\" style=\"font-style: italic\">reliability<\/span><span id=\"E591\">. Matt noted they had only had two five minute outages in past six months.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E593\" style=\"font-style: italic\">Mobility<\/span><span id=\"E594\">&#8211; Built for mobile platforms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E596\" style=\"font-style: italic\">Agility<\/span><span id=\"E597\">\u00a0&#8211; new version every 3 weeks, iterative development and product changes bringing new features. Institutions can choose when to enable new features. This agile approach required a re-think of the existing training provision to cater for receiving new features more regularly. Workshops now consist of a short demo followed by a guided workshop.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E600\" style=\"font-style: italic\">Connectability<\/span><span id=\"E602\">\u00a0&#8211; Canvas is a social learning platform &#8211; more connections between staff and students and between students.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"E603\"><span id=\"E604\">Matt acknowledged there are risks of choosing a product with no history in the UK, but there was an appetite within the institution to be distinctive amongst peers and it was felt that the benefits and opportunities outweighed the <\/span><span id=\"E606\">risks.In<\/span><span id=\"E608\"> terms of the roll out, they had created over 4,000 Canvas courses by start of term accounting. <\/span><span id=\"E610\">WebCT<\/span><span id=\"E612\"> is being run in parallel for 1 year, but only 350 courses remaining (10% of what was there last year). They trained over 600 people on the new system, but found that the majority didn&#8217;t require training due to the ease of use of the system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E613\"><span id=\"E614\">The move to Canvas has been positive and Matt noted a reduction in the support demands from staff and students. <\/span><span id=\"E616\">WebCT<\/span><span id=\"E618\"> had generally been used as a repository, but now they are seeing<\/span><span id=\"E619\"> a broader use of the VLE and it<\/span><span id=\"E620\">s toolset, especially communication tools, and staff seem more engaged\u00a0and willing to try other features. There has also been use for non-academic purposes, such as the student counselling team.\u00a0Student feedback has been positive, primarily in terms of its ease of use.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E621\"><span id=\"E622\">It was noted that currently there are some features not yet available such as anonymous and multiple marking, fully featured integration with <\/span><span id=\"E624\">Turnitin<\/span><span id=\"E626\"> and no support for SCORM, but these are on the roadmap.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E627\"><span id=\"E628\">Further information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a id=\"E631\" class=\"qowt-field qowt-field-hyperlink\" href=\"http:\/\/cl.ly\/2K0q1t0D0t2E\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E632\">View Matt&#8217;s presentation slides<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E633\"> &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><a id=\"E635\" class=\"qowt-field qowt-field-hyperlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.prnewswire.co.uk\/news-releases\/university-of-birmingham-increases-student-satisfaction-by-integrating-technology-into-the-learning-experience-with-canvas-vle-by-instructure-261935041.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E636\">Results of University of Birmingham student satisfaction survey<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E637\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"E638-owchain-0\"><span id=\"E639\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Canvas at <\/span><span id=\"E641\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Coralesce<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"E645\">Christina Conroy presented the experiences of <\/span><span id=\"E647\">Coralesce<\/span><span id=\"E649-owchain-0\">, a small\u00a0company who provide online learning to learning and skills sector. They were previously Moodle\u00a0users hosted by an FE college. As part of their VLE review they looked at what US community colleges in Seattle and Vancouver were<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-8\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E540\">\n<p id=\"E638-owchain-1\"><span id=\"E649-owchain-1\">doing and saw\u00a0examples of supporting online apprenticeships with Canvas. In addition, a tender for Washington <\/span><span id=\"E650\">S<\/span><span id=\"E651\">tate had thoroughly tested 40 VLEs and had chosen Canvas. One of their key requirements was to be able to provide individual user licences to use CPD materials rather than just an institutional licence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E652\"><span id=\"E653\">Christina highlighted two projects which will be using Canvas: <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adult Enterprise &#8211; 400 hours of online content, partnering with 25 colleges to deliver the content. They had found that Moodle was very clunky and they didn&#8217;t have 24\/7 support as it was hosted by a College. All courses will be going on Canvas from July 2014 &#8211; chargeable at a user level.<\/li>\n<li><a id=\"E657\" class=\"qowt-field qowt-field-hyperlink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.designelearn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E658\">Design <\/span><span id=\"E660\">eLearn<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E662\"> &#8211; working with 8 colleges to develop a national qualification for e-learning designers due to be launched in September 2014.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"E663\"><span id=\"E664\">The reasons for choosing Canvas included:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Easy to use and customise by instructors<\/li>\n<li>Easy to use and attractive for learners<\/li>\n<li>Clear navigation<\/li>\n<li>Resources viewable on platform e.g. resources on external sites are displayed within the Canvas interface, rather than in an external page<\/li>\n<li>Versatility on various devices<\/li>\n<li>Grading and assessment systems<\/li>\n<li>Educational values of the company<\/li>\n<li>24\/7\u00a0technical support.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2 id=\"E681\"><span id=\"E682\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">About Canvas<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"E685\">Richard Horton introduced what Canvas can provide in terms of hosting via Amazon Web Services and highlighted key benefits of cloud hosting:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Always up to date &#8211; due to being able to push updates and new features out.<\/li>\n<li>Always provisioned &#8211; ability to automatically provide extra system resource during critical\/busy times.<\/li>\n<li>Always backed up &#8211; no data loss and disaster recovery included.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"E692\"><span id=\"E693\">Finally Jas <\/span><span id=\"E695\">Kalsi<\/span><span id=\"E697\"> demonstrated Canvas showcasing the following features:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Drag and drop calendar with functionality for arranging staff &#8216;office hours&#8217; bookings.<\/li>\n<li>Ability to customise notifications with integrations with Facebook, Twitter and Google doc<\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E703\">Course to-do list, announcements, <\/span><span id=\"E705\">discussion<\/span><span id=\"E707\"> forms.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Rich Content Editor<\/li>\n<li>Inline preview for certain documents, e.g. Microsoft Word, so the person viewing the content doesn&#8217;t have to have the specific software installed.<\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E715\">Speedgrader<\/span><span id=\"E717\"> tool for marking assignments and an associated mobile marking app.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Fully functioning gradebook<\/li>\n<li>Portfolio tool<\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E723\">Over 140 LTI integrations with tools such as <\/span><span id=\"E725\">Kaltura<\/span><span id=\"E727\">, <\/span><span id=\"E729\">BigBlueButton<\/span><span id=\"E731\">, Ethereal and <\/span><span id=\"E733\">GoogleDocs<\/span><span id=\"E735\"> and all tools listed at\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"E737\" style=\"color: #0000ff\"><a id=\"E736\" class=\"qowt-field qowt-field-hyperlink\" href=\"http:\/\/eduappscenter.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Eduappscenter.com<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"qowt-stl6 qowt-li-1_0 qowt-list\"><span id=\"E739\">Anyone interested in trying out Canvas can get access to a <\/span><a id=\"E740\" class=\"qowt-field qowt-field-hyperlink\" href=\"http:\/\/canvasvle.co.uk\/freetrial.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E741\">free trial account<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E742\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-9\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E540\">\n<h2 id=\"E743-owchain-1\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E746\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Conclusion<\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E747\" style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E748\">Overall <\/span><span id=\"E749\">Canvas<\/span><span id=\"E750\"> <\/span><span id=\"E751\">p<\/span><span id=\"E752\">rovide<\/span><span id=\"E753\">s<\/span><span id=\"E754\"> similar<\/span><span id=\"E755\"> functionality to other VLEs &#8211; c<\/span><span id=\"E756\">ommunication tools, <\/span><span id=\"E757\">a<\/span><span id=\"E758\">ssessment tools, <\/span><span id=\"E759\">c<\/span><span id=\"E760\">ontent delivery<\/span><span id=\"E761\"> \u2013 with some potentially useful features such as notification integration with Facebook\/Twitter<\/span><span id=\"E762\">. <\/span><span id=\"E763\">It\u2019s great to see that <\/span><span id=\"E764\">Canvas integrates with over 140 tools via LTI, <\/span><span id=\"E765\">however depending on the implementation of LTI it<\/span><span id=\"E766\"> may mean the integration is not as fully featured as existing plugins developed <\/span><span id=\"E767\">specifically <\/span><span id=\"E768\">for systems such as Blackboard and Moodle. Functionality such as anonymous and multiple marking is not currently available, but Canvas assured us they are working on it.
