{"id":4337,"date":"2014-11-21T16:10:45","date_gmt":"2014-11-21T16:10:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/newsletter.alt.ac.uk\/?p=4337"},"modified":"2014-11-21T16:10:45","modified_gmt":"2014-11-21T16:10:45","slug":"sam-self-help-anxiety-app-offers-real-support-for-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/2014\/11\/sam-self-help-anxiety-app-offers-real-support-for-students\/","title":{"rendered":"SAM self-help anxiety app offers real support for students"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-7\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E171\">\n<p id=\"E172\">A self-help anxiety app developed by UWE (The University of the West of England) is helping students to better manage their anxiety and provide 24\/7 mobile support at any time or place.<\/p>\n<p id=\"E187\"><span id=\"E188\">The application called SAM provides a platform of therapeutic and immersive activities that students can access and use. Already in the top 100 health and fitness charts across 43 countries, this app is prov<\/span><span id=\"E189\">ing to be invaluable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span id=\"E204\">Developing an app, the process and <\/span><span id=\"E205\">impact<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"E206\"><span id=\"E207\">At the inception of the project, the <\/span><span id=\"E208\">project <\/span><span id=\"E209\">team at UWE conducted surveys on social anxiety within different learning situations at lectures, presentations, seminars and group work at both UWE and Plymouth University. From the research <\/span><span id=\"E210\" style=\"font-style: italic\">(<\/span><span id=\"E211\" style=\"font-style: italic\">see: <\/span><a id=\"E212\" class=\"qowt-field qowt-field-hyperlink\" href=\"http:\/\/info.uwe.ac.uk\/news\/uwenews\/news.aspx?id=2315\" target=\"_blank\"><span id=\"E213\" class=\"qowt-stl7\" style=\"font-style: italic;color: #0000ff\">Is social anxiety a hidden disability for university students?)<\/span><\/a><span id=\"E214\" class=\"qowt-stl7\" style=\"font-style: italic;color: #0000ff\"> <\/span><span id=\"E215\"> <\/span><span id=\"E217\">it<\/span><span id=\"E219\"> was evident that anxiety was <\/span><span id=\"E221\">a<\/span><span id=\"E223\"> significant issue for undergraduate students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E224\"><span id=\"E225\">Following on from the research the computer science and creative technologies department suggested that an app may be a versatile mobile solution.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-8\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E171\">\n<p id=\"E226\"><span id=\"E227\">Computing students at UWE were then invited as part of their course to design and develop a prototype app to aid anxiety management. Some of the research was funded by <\/span><span id=\"E230\">HEAT@uwe<\/span><span id=\"E232\">, an EPSRC-funded programme of activities to develop, facilitate and communicate interdisciplinary research between the Institute of Sustainability, Health and the Environment (ISHE) and Bristol Institute of Technology (BIT).<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E233\"><span id=\"E234\">One of the important aspects for the development of the app was that many of the students involved in the design process had some social anxiety issues themselves, so many of the following considerations were aspects that the students would want in a self-help app:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monitoring and recording anxiety<\/li>\n<li>Detail the kind of physiological symptoms of anxiety experienced<\/li>\n<li>Worrying thoughts associated<\/li>\n<li>The types of avoidance behaviours as a result of anxiety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4362\" style=\"width: trialling of the prototype the university further developed a full working version of the app and named it SAM. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E247\"><span id=\"E248\">In terms of the app, there are a number of different options for users, which are clearly displayed and invite the user to explore further, these are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span id=\"E250\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Working with SAM<\/span><span id=\"E251\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\" style=\"font-weight: bold\"> <\/span><span id=\"E252\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E253\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> Information about what users can expect of SAM and guidance on getting the best<\/span><span id=\"E254\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> out of SAM as a self-help tool<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E256\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Help for anxiety NOW<\/span><span id=\"E257\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> <\/span><span id=\"E258\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E259\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> Clear and engaging instructions for managin<\/span><span id=\"E260\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">g moments of more acute anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E262\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">How\u2019s my anxiety now?<\/span><span id=\"E263\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> <\/span><span id=\"E264\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E265\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> A visual display which enables users to record and monitor their anxiety <\/span><span id=\"E266\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">over time &#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E267\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> Users are invited t<\/span><span id=\"E268\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">o self-monitor on each of <\/span><span id=\"E269\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">four dimensions of anxiety: feeling, thinking, physical sens<\/span><span id=\"E270\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">ations and avoidance tendencies<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E272\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Anxiety tracker<\/span><span id=\"E273\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> <\/span><span id=\"E274\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">&#8211;<\/span><span id=\"E275\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> The ongoing record of the user\u2019s anxiety on each of the four dimensions of anxiety, abo<\/span><span id=\"E276\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\">ve<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E278\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Things that make me anxious<\/span><span id=\"E279\" for managing anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span id=\"E293\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">Social cloud<\/span><span id=\"E294-owchain-0\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"> &#8211; A closed, anonymous social network of SAM users where they can share concerns, gain support, obtain further information and guidance about<\/span><\/li>\n<li>managing anxiety<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure id=\"E299\">students with their anxiety issues. This section additionally includes activities that can help promote and stimulate peaceful thoughts and provide a <\/span><span id=\"E356\">way to relax, such as with the <\/span><span id=\"E357\" style=\"font-style: italic\">picture peace<\/span><span id=\"E358\"> activity, which is a simple, but effective way of helping to calm the mind through interacting with the screen to reveal the id=\"E373\"><span id=\"E374\">The activities and exercises can all be rated within the app as well as added to the <\/span><span id=\"E376\" style=\"font-style: italic\">My<\/span><span id=\"E378\" style=\"font-style: italic\"> anxiety toolkit <\/span><span id=\"E379\">area, which saves specific exercises or activities so that the student can access their favourite ones quickly.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-14\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E171\">\n<p id=\"E380\"><span id=\"E381\">SAM has an area for recording anxiety and linking this to a task, which populates an entry into the outlook calendar on the tablet or smart device and a<\/span><span id=\"E382\">n additional<\/span><span id=\"E383\"> <\/span><span id=\"E385\">reminder<\/span><span id=\"E387\"> can be added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E388\"><span id=\"E389\">There are also <\/span><span id=\"E390\">interactive activities such as <\/span><span id=\"E392\" style=\"font-style: italic\">It\u2019s<\/span><span id=\"E394\" style=\"font-style: italic\"> only a thought<\/span><span id=\"E395\"> which allows the student to enter their worrying thoughts and then these can be tapped to watch them float away as clouds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E396\"><span id=\"E397\">Worrying thoughts can be exploded <\/span><span id=\"E398\">away using the <\/span><span id=\"E399\" style=\"font-style: italic\">Stop that thought<\/span><span id=\"E400\"> activity, which allows the student to type their thoughts into a word bubble and then watch them star ratings and has featured on the NHS website as being one of the top apps for anxiety self-help. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E429-owchain-0\"><span id=\"E430-owchain-0\">Whilst the app should not be seen as a replacement for face-to-face therapy, it does provide a 24\/7 mobile solution for students to use wherever they may be as long as they have an<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"qowt-page-container\">\n<div id=\"E-15\" class=\"qowt-section qowt-eid-E171\">\n<p id=\"E429-owchain-1\"><span id=\"E430-owchain-1\">internet connection with their smartphone or tablet device. <\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"E431\"><span id=\"E432\" style=\"font-style: italic\">\u201cI think that for some people it will mean that they will never need a face-to-face because they can sort out their problems with the help of SAM and for other people if they have a positive experience of using SAM it may make them more likely to consider face-to-face therapy when before they wouldn\u2019t have eve<\/span><span id=\"E435\" style=\"font-style: italic\">n have thought of it.\u201d<\/span><span id=\"E436\"> <\/span><span id=\"E437\">&#8211; <\/span><span id=\"E438\" class=\"qowt-font5-Arial\"
