Would it be possible to send any resources that we could use with in a lesson it would be appreciated &#8230;\u00a0my son is at keystage 3 he is 12 years old he loves how games are created how computers are constructed and the science behind it all&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">ALT as a membership organisation doesn&#8217;t hold lists like this but with our\u00a0charitable objective in mind,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;to advance education through increasing, exploring and disseminating knowledge in the field of learning technology for the benefit of the general public&#8221;<\/strong>, see the 2014-2017 ALT strategy <a href=\"http:\/\/repository.alt.ac.uk\/2330\">http:\/\/repository.alt.ac.uk\/2330<\/a>, I thought it was a question the ALT-MEMBERS list could help with. Perhaps not surprisingly very quickly the thread had over a dozen responses. Here&#8217;s the edited list I returned to the enquirer:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><b>Kahn Academy &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/<\/a>\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>Mainly based around educational videos and interactive content. Loads of free courses to take at your own pace. Guidance on how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/coach-res\/parents-and-tutors\/home-case-studies\/a\/start-homeschooling-with-khan-academy\" target=\"_blank\">use with home schooling<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Codecademy &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.codecademy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.codecademy.com\/<\/a><\/b><\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>Codecademy have a number of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.codecademy.com\/schools\/curriculum\" target=\"_blank\">teaching resources<\/a>\u00a0 that map onto the nation curriculum. The site allows you to interactive explore coding concepts. For web making\/coding check out\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/webmaker.org\/en-US\" target=\"_blank\">Mozilla Webmaker<\/a>. The sites includes a range of bite-sized resources\/activities\/challenges etc. and offer reward &amp; recognition through badges<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<b>Computing at School<\/b> &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.computingatschool.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.computingatschool.org.uk\/<\/a><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>you might want to join\u00a0Computing at School\u00a0as an organisation it is free to join and you will find \u00a0a wealth of \u00a0online resources which you can download free and use to teach computing, computing science and technology you can also get help and support too for teaching and learning and events.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<b>Offer of help &#8211;\u00a0Arron Martin Zeus-Brown &#8211; Digital forensics Expert &#8211; Teeside University.<\/b><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>As a digital forensics programme leader I\u2019m constantly writing up taster sessions in introduce 12 to 16 year old in to the field of Digital forensics, with the pack I produce teachers notes to aid the visiting academics and I\u2019d be more than happy to offer my services free of charge to put a small collection of worksheet bespoke for them<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<b>Raspberry Pi (~\u00a324-30)<\/b><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>Raspberry Pi, perhaps with one of the associated kits\/bundles. Plus one of the introductory guides \u00a0and a learning Python book would make an introduction.\u00a0 Robot arms and lego stuff could then be added as necessary.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>For the case mentioned I\u2019d be tempted to cherry pick bits of the new Computing curriculum \u2013 perhaps look at learning how to use the Raspberry Pi to achieve his interests \u2013 whilst addressing my concerns about a structure by trying to meet some of the KS2\/3 learning outcomes of the Computing curriculum.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<b>Scratch &#8211; programming language for kids\u00a0<\/b><\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>Following on from suggestion about the Raspberry Pi and the 12-year-old&#8217;s interest in what lies behind games and computers, what about\u00a0<i>Scratch<\/i>, as an introduction to programming? Here&#8217;s a link to the page on their website with information specifically for parents:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/parents\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/scratch.mit.edu\/parents\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>If he is too young for scratch, maybe he can try scratchjr? \u00a0 \u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.scratchjr.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.scratchjr.org\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<b>Lego Mindstorms (~\u00a3200)<\/b><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>We had a lot of fun over Christmas with Lego Mindstorms. Well worth \u00a3200. The programming in Mindstorms is basically the same as Scratch (in fact I think it is Scratch)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>LEGO have <a href=\"http:\/\/education.lego.com\/es-ar\/preschool-and-school\/secondary\" target=\"_blank\">teaching resources available<\/a><\/div>\n<p><b>digital eagles<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>Barclay\u2019s Bank have launched a computing for children initiative called \u2018digital eagles\u2019. I\u2019ve seen it advertised on TV and there are details here <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/2240238203\/Barclays-bank-launches-kids-coding-site\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.computerweekly.com\/news\/2240238203\/Barclays-bank-launches-kids-coding-site<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>The have an online site called Code Playground (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barclays.co.uk\/DigitalEagles\/BarclaysCodePlayground\/P1242686640999\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.barclays.co.uk\/DigitalEagles\/BarclaysCodePlayground\/P1242686640999<\/a>) and they are also advertising workshops in addition to online resources.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<b>Events<\/b><\/div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>If the family live anywhere near Cambridge, these events look relevant:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.computinghistory.org.uk\/pages\/30677\/What-s-On\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.computinghistory.org.uk\/pages\/30677\/What-s-On\/<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div>\u00a0<b>Other<\/b><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"gmail_quote\"><p>There has been quite a focus on IT in most of the responses. However, I notice that the young person in question seems to have a broader interest in the STEM subjects. In that case, I would definitely recommend the Royal Society of Chemistry&#8217;s site <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rsc.org\/resources-tools\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.rsc.org\/resources-tools\/<\/a> .<br \/>\nThe &#8216;Learn Chemistry&#8217; site does exactly what it does on the tin.
