{"id":5396,"date":"2015-12-21T14:38:12","date_gmt":"2015-12-21T14:38:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/?p=5396"},"modified":"2016-01-18T12:34:33","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T12:34:33","slug":"misuse-of-social-media-alt-members-suggestions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/2015\/12\/misuse-of-social-media-alt-members-suggestions\/","title":{"rendered":"Misuse of social media &#8211; ALT-MEMBERS suggestions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Recently Sue Watling from Hull University asked the ALT-MEMBERS mailing list for advice on developing a policy document on the use of social media which in particular addresses misuse:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for dealing with misuse of social media, for example students using anonymous apps (like yikyak) for inappropriate behaviour likely to cause distress to others, both staff and students<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sue has followed her original post with a post compiling responses to her original question. As this is an area that may be of wider interest to the community, and with Sue&#8217;s permission, we&#8217;ve reposted an edited version of her compiled list: \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Several people suggested the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/socmedhe\/\" target=\"_blank\">conference at Sheffield Hallam on 18th December<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This was the Social Media for Learning in Higher Education Conference #SocMedHE15 organised by Sue Beckingham, Helen Rodger, Alison Purvis and Andrew Middleton. \u00a0If you weren&#8217;t there\u00a0in person you can see a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/socmedhe\/keynote\/\" target=\"_blank\">recording of Eric Stoller&#8217;s keynote<\/a> and read abstracts on the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.shu.ac.uk\/socmedhe\/programme-details\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conference programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A number of these leaflets are also available for reuse under a Creative Commons CC-BY-NC-SA licence. These leaflets were developed by Sue Beckingham and the the team at<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Sheffield Hallam, Sue is also one of the current organisers of #LTHEchat<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sue Beckingham confirmed Dr Bex Lewis will guest lead a #LTHEchat on \u2018Managing negative use of social media and cyberbullying\u2019 \u2013 not until April as the programme is so booked up \u2013 but maybe worth putting in diaries.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">#LTHEchats take place every Wednesday 8-9pmGMT. For more information visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/lthechat.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">LTHEchat website<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These Jisc resources were suggested:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/guides\/internet-safety\" target=\"_blank\">Internet safety (or e-safety)<\/a> about safe and responsible practice with technology and the sensible management of risks presented by the digital world.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webarchive.org.uk\/wayback\/archive\/20150703220701\/http:\/www.jisclegal.ac.uk\/Portals\/12\/Documents\/eSafety%20Policy%20Template%202012.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">e-Safety Policy Template \u00a0October 2012<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">originally developed by Jisc Legal and referenced in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/guides\/internet-safety\/standards-and-policies\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Standards and Policy section<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of the Internet safety guide.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Eric Stoller pointed towards:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some <a href=\"http:\/\/www2.warwick.ac.uk\/services\/externalaffairs\/marketing\/digital\/social-copy\/guidelines\" target=\"_blank\">Social Media Guidelines from the University of Warwick\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.udel.edu\/socialmedia\/ud-guidelines.html\" target=\"_blank\">University Guidelines from the University of Delaware<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also from Eric:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In terms of apps like Yik Yak that tend to be hotspots for controversial content, I know that universities in the U.S. have included the app as part of student conduct guides&#8230;as in, if you post something that violates the campus code of conduct (and you&#8217;re discovered to be the poster), you&#8217;ll be sanctioned in the same way as you would if you sent something via email, text, Facebook, etc:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/goo.gl\/nw1oQH\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">https:\/\/goo.gl\/nw1oQH<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/theithacan.org\/news\/student-judicially-referred-for-posting-threats-on-yik-yak\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">http:\/\/theithacan.org\/news\/student-judicially-referred-for-posting-threats-on-yik-yak\/<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It&#8217;s going to be interesting to see if Yik Yak on the web (still in\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">beta) will result in enhanced &#8220;listening&#8221; efforts by universities to capture harassing posts for future sanctions:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.yikyakapp.com\/post\/133531255801\/sneak-peek-yik-yak-for-the-web-is-now-in-beta\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">http:\/\/blog.yikyakapp.com\/post\/133531255801\/sneak-peek-yik-yak-for-the-web-is-now-in-beta<\/span><\/i><\/a><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I know of some institutions in the U.S. that have students sign an agreement (usually as part of a computing \/ network access policy) saying that they understand the code of &#8220;digital&#8221; conduct and that they are aware that if they violate said agreement, that they will be subject to consequences.<\/span><\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Others suggested Eric Stoller\u2019s paper<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insidehighered.com\/blogs\/student-affairs-and-technology\/social-media-questions-and-answers\" target=\"_blank\">Social Media Questions and Answers<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This article again touches on use of Yik Yak by students but also includes Eric&#8217;s response to a wider set of questions about social media and technology in education.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2015\/12\/21132194610_a2f9c86c19_z.jpg?ssl=1\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5407\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5407 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2015\/12\/21132194610_a2f9c86c19_z.jpg?resize=640%2C427&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2015\/12\/21132194610_a2f9c86c19_z.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2015\/12\/21132194610_a2f9c86c19_z.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There was general advice about the rules about harassment and good conduct which should apply to social media in the same way they do in the physical space along with emphasising the positive use of social media and then mentioning misuse, an example being the ANU guideline &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/policies.anu.edu.au\/ppl\/document\/ANUP_000785\" target=\"_blank\">Social media participation by ANU students<\/a>&#8220;.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These guidelines are short and concise and the page also contains a link to similar guidelines for staff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another example offered is from the University of Bedfordshire. Go to <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beds.ac.uk\/search\/external-document-search-page\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">http:\/\/www.beds.ac.uk\/search\/external-document-search-page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and search for \u201csocial media\u201d. Or see this\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beds.ac.uk\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0003\/485310\/Policy-for-Use-of-Social-Media-in-teaching-and-learning.pdf\">Use of Social Media in Teaching &amp; Learning Policy<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">document for staff and students. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There were a few comments from other people having issues with Yik Yak; suggesting it does not seem isolated to any one institution or cohort. There were also suggestions for referring to relevant professional body&#8217;s policies for professional behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Another resource released recently is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ucisa.ac.uk\/socialmedia\">UCISA Social Media Toolkit: a practical guide practical guide to achieving benefits and managing risks<\/a>. This toolkit usefully\u00a0highlights the benefits of social media in education, even more example strategies and policies, legal issues as well as dealing with things when they go wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lastly, the OU has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/students\/charter\/essential-documents\/computing-code-conduct-students\" target=\"_blank\">computing code of conduct<\/a> and within that is the use of social media.
