ALT\u2019s Open Education SIG ran three webinars during the week, focusing on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alt.ac.uk\/civicrm\/event\/info?reset=1&amp;id=217\" target=\"_blank\">the future for Open Educational Resources<\/a> (OER) in the UK, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alt.ac.uk\/civicrm\/event\/info?reset=1&amp;id=218\" target=\"_blank\">accessibility<\/a>, and the forthcoming conference in Edinburgh <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alt.ac.uk\/civicrm\/event\/info?reset=1&amp;id=219\">OER16<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Interconnection.<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspiration came from all over the worl<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">d. International events were linked from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.openeducationweek.org\/events\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Open Education Week website <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the Hewlett Foundation\u2019s OER World Map launched a project to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oerworldmap.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/10\/can-we-map-open-education-week\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">map the week\u2019s activity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their blog welcomes your input. In the USA this celebratory <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.state.gov\/stories\/2016\/03\/11\/celebrating-open-education-week-open-educational-resources\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0government blog post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encouraged teachers and learners to think about how OER can foster international collaboration and extend discussions through communities of open practice. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coerll.utexas.edu\/coerll\/sites\/coerll.utexas.edu.coerll\/files\/sharing-oer-infographic.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">infographic <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from the University of Texas exemplifies how this can be achieved and the many advantages of working in this way. This <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/teachonline.asu.edu\/2016\/02\/introduction-to-open-educational-resources-oer\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona State University post <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">provided an introduction to OER and open practice for teachers and a call to action for their community. \u00a0Swem library in Virginia <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/swem.wm.edu\/services\/oer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">made a public pledge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to seek out and support the use of open textbooks and resources for students in order to reduce the financial burden on students.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Equity<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have been attracted to a recent hashtag suggested on twitter: #tequity &#8211; a portmanteau formed from technology and equity. This focus on fairness and inclusion is a central theme for the Open Education movement. OERs are generally thought of as digital resources but not everyone has access to a computer or the skills necessary to engage and open practice is not only about the digital domain. The UK\u2019s progress in digital inclusion is outlined on the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/mediapolicyproject\/2015\/10\/19\/measuring-inequalities-in-a-digital-britain\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LSE\u2019s Media Policy Project blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it is clear that there remains work to do. \u00a0Ownership too is a recurring debate. The principle of publicly funded resources being available to all is stated in this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@hplotkin\/who-owns-digital-learning-resources-funded-by-taxpayers-543160cbf1f4#.yfmcfkclj\">american blog post<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/oesig\/2016\/03\/06\/the-sharing-economy-how-does-open-education-fit-in-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">T<\/a><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/oesig\/2016\/03\/06\/the-sharing-economy-how-does-open-education-fit-in-part-1\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sharing economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> formed the focus of the inaugural post on the new ALT Open Education SIG which launched during Open Education week along with a new community space for all those interested in joining the discussion. It is clear that there is still a good deal of discussion to come and this was demonstrated in <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/cogdogblog.com\/2016\/03\/open-is-the-porch-light-being-on-and-more\/comment-page-1\/#comment-986713\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alan Levine\u2019s post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the comments which arose around it.
