A good place to start is with a poem \u201cThis is the Place\u201d by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LongfellaPoet\">Tony Walsh<\/a>\u00a0that was commissioned in 2011 by <a href=\"https:\/\/forevermanchester.com\/\">Forever Manchester<\/a>, and performed at a vigil 24 hours after the Manchester Arena bombing in May 2017.\u00a0 He captures quite a lot in 5 minutes \u2013 industry, science, libraries, education, computers, football, suffragettes, Northern Soul, Manchester people and their spirit.<\/p>\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BmSKF5hdIpw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-GB&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Getting around Manchester is easy with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tfgm.com\/public-transport\/bus\/metroshuttle\">free Metroshuttle<\/a>\u00a0 &#8211; there are 3 routes around the city centre, nearest stops to the conference venue are on Oxford Street and Portland Street \u2013 check map for routes.<\/p>\n<p>So here are a few things you can do while you are at ALTC 2018 &#8211; more ideas can be found on the conference page &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/2018\/discover-manchester-altc\/\">Discover Manchester<\/a>&#8216;:<\/p>\n<p>You can visit the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nationalfootballmuseum.com\/\">National Football Museum<\/a> in the Urbis Building (M4 3BG &#8211; 30 minute walk from venue or Metroshuttle). I hear it\u2019s very interesting for those who like that sort of thing &#x263a;.<\/p>\n<p>You can visit the People\u2019s History Museum in Bridge Street (hop on No. 50 bus on Upper Brook Street, parallel to Oxford Road or the Metroshuttle). It has a welcoming social space with a caf\u00e9 and multimedia gateways to the Archives, as well as traditional reading rooms. John Rylands Library is a wonderful experience, as I wrote about in <a href=\"https:\/\/francesbell.com\/bellblog\/libraries-in-my-life\/\">this 2015 post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You can take a selfie at the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alan_Turing_Memorial\">Alan Turing Memorial<\/a> in Sackville Gardens, which is a 10 minute walk from the conference venue, like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/catherinecronin\">Catherine Cronin<\/a>\u00a0and I did earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you are in Manchester on Monday 10 September, then you are welcome to join a walking tour with me at 3pm &#8211; I will post more details on Twitter, using the #altc, on where to meet but we will walk down Oxford Road with a brief detour past the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pankhursttrust.org\/pankhurst-centre\">Pankhurst Centre<\/a>, former family home of Emmeline Pankhurst where the first suffragette meetings were held (open Thursdays 1000-1600). The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk\/\">Whitworth Art Gallery<\/a> is a beautiful recently refurbished art gallery situated in Whitworth Park. The art collection includes textile and mixed media art as well as paintings and sculptures, as you can see from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.whitworth.manchester.ac.uk\/whats-on\/exhibitions\/currentexhibitions\/\">current exhibitions<\/a>. We&#8217;ll leave time for refreshments in the magical cafe in the trees before walking back to the conference venue for registration.<\/p>\n<p>Once you have had a taste of what Manchester has to offer, think about coming back for a longer stay: there\u2019s a lot to see and do.
