Following the Jisc <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jisc.ac.uk\/blog\/announcing-the-results-of-the-2018-student-digital-experience-survey-11-sep-2018\">Digital experience insights survey 2018<\/a>, it was found that only 41% of students who were asked felt that their course of study \u2018prepared them for the digital workplace\u2019. Our students are embarking on career paths which are invariably changing at a rapid pace, particularly in relation to technology. Many of our students are aspiring to become teachers of Physical Education and being &#8216;digitally literate&#8217; is a crucial prerequisite of employability in this domain.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Andrew Sprake \u2013 Lecturer in Physical Education &amp;\u00a0<\/em><em>Jess Macbeth \u2013 Senior Lecturer in Sport Studies.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was identified across several disciplines that students were already demonstrating a number of digital skills, often without realising themselves and normally without any kind of formal recognition which could aid their future employability.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>&#8220;At UCLan, the midwifery curriculum prides itself on allowing students to develop digital literacy skills and encouraging\u00a0them\u00a0to be \u2018digitally ready\u2019 when seeking employment.\u00a0\u00a0With\u00a0employers often stating that digital skills are an essential requirement for those applying for the role of a newly qualified midwife,\u00a0the team see this as an essential component of the midwifery course.\u00a0Lecturers lead by example, by ensuring that all teaching and learning resources are delivered using digital approaches, encouraging the students to engage with these methods of learning.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Neesha Ridley \u2013 Senior Lecturer in Midwifery<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2019\/01\/V3.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-7663\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2019\/01\/V3.png?resize=346%2C353&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"346\" height=\"353\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2019\/01\/V3.png?resize=294%2C300&amp;ssl=1 294w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/altc.alt.ac.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/1112\/2019\/01\/V3.png?w=400&amp;ssl=1 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 346px) 100vw, 346px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our approach was to look at developing \u2018DigiReady\u2019, a new student certification underpinned by the <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcapability.jiscinvolve.org\/wp\/2017\/03\/09\/digital-capabilities-framework-an-update\/\">Jisc digital capabilities framework<\/a> (image above) and adapted from a more recent <a href=\"https:\/\/education.microsoft.com\/fe\">Microsoft tool<\/a>. Implemented at course level, it centres around eight core skills ranging from effective communication, to online safety\/security and profile management.<\/p>\n<p>Students build up their evidence of skill development across these areas, which they record into an e-portfolio using OneNote Class Notebook<em>.<\/em> Evidence can consist of annotated screenshots, audio\/video reflections, and sometimes involves different participation in interactive activities. The e-portfolio provides tutors with instant access to each individual student space, where they can monitor progress and provide valuable feedback along the way. Students are also asked to build a short presentation or video answering three reflective questions, which draw on evidence from their portfolio and overall DigiReady journey and development. This final digital artefact aims to provide a valuable resource that will support students in their future employability.<\/p>\n<p>Jean Duckworth and Hazel Partington \u2013 both academics at the University, lead a suite of online Masters level courses and modules. By doing this, students get to know each other and have the tools to fully engage in their studies.
