Blockchain learning: can cryptocurrency methods be appropriated to enhance online learning? Type: Webinar/Hangout Authors: Peter Devine
Wed, Dec 9 2015, 11:00am – 11:30am Blockchain is a distributed database that maintains a dynamic list of data records, hardened to prevent tampering and revision. It is the framework for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. A Blockchain learning tool would provide a secure and verifiable learning transaction ledger. Its decentralised nature would ensure a learner, rather than institution-centred record of achievements that would be difficult to tamper with, enabling parties, such as employers or learning institutions, to review with confidence. As a mechanism for transferring credit, Blockchain might also be used to enable selected actions to be rewarded with tokens that can be then traded against future learning...more

Online Patient Stories to Educate Healthcare Professionals Type: Webinar/Hangout Authors: Bex Ferriday
Wed, Dec 9 2015, 11:30am – 12:00am PLEASE NOTE: Apologies – this session has been cancelled The technology-based skills audit has become a much-maligned resource within the teachers’ staffroom: often cited as a pointless exercise in generating paperwork, with questions that don’t relate wholly to the specifc aim of the audit, and, as a result, staff levels of knowledge and confidence regarding learning technology remaining unchanged, while levels of scepticism grow. Cardiff University’s School of Healthcare Sciences has developed an online audit that: * Takes participants no more than a few minutes to complete * Relates to social media, OERs, and free-to-use, web based TEL apps and...more

Using Nearpod in a blended learning setting Type: Webinar/Hangout Authors: Niels Walet
Wed, Dec 9 2015, 1:30pm – 2:00pm I will discuss the development of a flipped-lecture programming course. In this course I have used videos and nearpod (in a computer cluster) with up to 130 students–with some success since the course won best in e-learning in the EPS faculty at Manchester, based on student nominations. I would like to debate some of the ideas underlying this course; also there are some aspects that could do with some improvement, and I could do with some feedback. I will make some of the materials (a video, a nearpod homework session, and maybe one or two other artifacts) available before my...more

Wed, Dec 9 2015, 2:00pm – 2:30pm Twitter use, particularly #edchat type events, by teachers in both compulsory and HE sectors, has become a favourite channel for sharing resources and ideas. In the process, teachers have built strong communities of practice. By using OER YouTube videos to show how to use social media (Twitter) for these purposes, teachers in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) should soon be able to replicate this successful use of social media. The barriers that have existed to date are slowly breaking down as communication technologies improve and become more accessible in many nations in the region. Now is the time to build bridges over...more
