Developing the university as an as e-textbook publisher – learning through eTIPS

As part of the Jisc ‘Institution as e-textbook publisher’ programme, the University of the Highlands and Islands and Edinburgh Napier University are collaborating on the eTIPS (e-Textbook Institutional Publishing Service) project.

The aim of eTIPS is to investigate the question “Will the institution as e-textbook creator help students by providing a more affordable higher education, and promote a better, more sustainable information environment for libraries, students and faculty?”.
eTIPS is exploring this through:

Producing two e-textbooks to support student research projects; Developing a companion website providing access to relevant open education resources; Researching and evaluating the uptake and use of the books by students and staff; Identifying lessons learned from the entire process, including recommendations for the future development of e-textbooks within universities.

This presentation will explore the progress of eTIPS to date, including lessons learned thus far.

Proposed Artifact: We propose producing a short (up to ten minute) screencast introduction to the eTIPS project. This will include a virtual tour of our recently published first e-textbook, and the companion website of open education resources and other supporting materials. We will then use the presentation itself to focus on the substantial issues relating to the eTIPS project’s progress and lessons learned to date.
