Description
This session draws on over ten years of experience of designing Level 1 introductory modules for Social Science students at the Open University. Approximately 40% of OU students starting Social Science modules have low prior educational qualifications: this statistic makes essential an innovative teaching support architecture to develop student academic and learning skills.
Drawing on this ten-year experience has shown that the blend of teaching materials is crucial to support students in developing study skills and in learning how to become social scientists. This blend includes printed materials, online activities, audio and visual materials and animations which provides a diverse range of learning opportunities and sufficient scaffolding for students.
The blend is also important in devising strategies to aid the retention of students on these modules – there is no one easy fix but rather a holistic approach to retention which combines traditional approaches – phone calls – with the use of data analytics. This session explores the holistic approach to retention which is yielding results in terms of retaining Level 1 Social Science students at the Open University.
