Description
At UCL, we moved from using WebCT in 2008, with a mere 400 courses, to a Moodle environment with over 7,000 courses in 2017, covering every taught module and programme. Such a large environment is impossible for a team of only tens of staff to support single-handedly. Without the support of staff in particular roles, we would not have reached this target.
University College London (UCL) is a large, research-intensive UK university, with a diverse and independent department structure. After many years, Moodle is now firmly entrenched in the UCL teaching culture. This is the story of how we got there.
In this 30 minute webinar, we’ll discuss the initiatives that led to the acceptance of Moodle by the majority of UCL staff and students, including the policies, guidance, networks and qualifications (including CMALT) that we initiated and supported to help achieve this milestone. We’ll review how particular roles have emerged, as a need for Moodle support has developed within departments.
Anyone who is interested in initiating organisational change should hear this story, including learning technologists, teachers and leaders.
Participants will leave with an understanding of how one university achieved online teaching spaces for every taught module and made the use of Moodle the norm across a campus with more than 44,000 students and over 4,000 teaching and support staff. While it took time to achieve this, we now have in place a robust system that will carry forward into the future, as we move towards increased use of Moodle for assessments, feedback, communication and collaboration.
