Session Description
Healthcare education is recognised to be significant for betterment of health, yet the World Health Organisation has highlighted the limited access globally to education and practical skills teaching equipment.
Virtual Reality Learning Environments (VRLE) are offered as a computer-generated virtual simulation of a clinical workspace. The VRLE can be experienced on mobile handheld devices, laptops and PCs. Research participants interact with simulations of patients, their families and other healthcare professionals. A range of clinical skills from practical, to more intuitive aspects of healthcare competency can be experienced.
VRLE are profession generic and topic specific so clinical skills can be practiced by healthcare students from a wider variety of disciplines. VRLE flexibility means educational institutions, worldwide, can provide access to clinical training and experiences which cannot otherwise be guaranteed.
The use of the VRLE has been researched for a doctorate exploring the impact of VRLE on healthcare education and found that VRLE offers healthcare students a space to practice clinical skills, has a positive impact on the confidence of healthcare students, a positive impact on their ability to develop their skills of clinical intuition, and has a positive impact on their patient care going forwards.
This presentation will present the research findings in detail and sow conference delegates a video of some of the VRLE in use in Bournemouth University’s healthcare curriculums.
