Session Description
This session examines the institutional response to the pandemic of 2020 and shows how a sound pedagogical underpinning enabled a transition to fully online teaching and learning for the University of Stirling. We also look at the impact that this approach is having on staff and students, both positive and negative.
This session will share, in a practical way, the steps we took to make our learning fully online and fully accessible for the start of the 2020 session in September.
We will demonstrate/ explain:
- how we worked together with other areas of the University to create a unified institutional approach to our covid-response, based on 7 key areas and some core principles
- our pedagogy-informed template in Canvas, being used for all modules, and how we developed this from existing models for online learning
- how we wrote and delivered a taught module to 400+ academic staff, which placed them in the position of being an online learner, giving them knowledge of the technology, tools and approach to distance learning and an empathy for learning online.
- how we have created modules which are welcoming, accessible and build a strong sense of ‘presence’ and ‘community’ within them.
- which software we deployed to underpin the learning and teaching and how this is used effectively with our students
- the way that key staff and students supported the development of the new modules and how we are taking these relationships further in the future.
We will also highlight some questions which need much greater consideration, and which have arisen from this process as we analyse the impact of the substantial changes that have been made to the way the university operates.
