Description
Session Description
The 2020 ucisa Survey of Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) tracks developments in the use of learning technologies across the UK higher education sector. This is the tenth survey of its kind, and offers a longitudinal perspective of TEL developments over a 19-year period within UK higher education, focusing on the provision already in place within institutions and the current, emerging and planned patterns of learning technology use across the HE community.
The design of the question set for the Survey has purposely evolved over the years, seeking to reflect current technology themes and challenges whilst retaining an eye on longitudinal developments. Survey design choices are strongly influenced by sector developments in the policy and management of TEL and we have closely monitored TEL practices both nationally and internationally to inform our thinking.
Specific changes introduced for this year’s survey included more explicit mention of accessibility in response to the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 and a new question on the unbundling of higher education (Czerniewicz, 2018) with reference to partnerships for fully online courses. The 2020 survey also retained questions from previous surveys on the centrally supported learning, teaching and assessment tools in use and those which are unsupported, enabling longitudinal analysis of teaching and learning developments to be captured.
The survey data was collected between January to March 2020 and analysed during April to June. The report will be published at ALT-C alongside this session, so participants will have the opportunity to hear and discuss the findings before anyone else.
This session relates primarily to the theme of leadership in learning technology, by considering the drivers for TEL and how they translate into the technologies in use, the review of practice and the support for TEL. It also relates to the theme of responding to complexity as we will identify the main challenges facing the sector and how institutions plan to respond to them.
Session content
Following on from the successful TEL Family Fortunes session in 2018, the session will be based on the TV quiz show ‘Have I Got News For You’, as a way to explore findings from the survey and challenge assumptions that we may make about practice across the sector.
Two teams will play several rounds to identify the responses to some of the findings from the 2020 UCISA Survey of Technology Enhanced Learning, whilst allowing the audience to play along. After each question the team and the audience will discuss what the findings mean in practice and the impact of TEL on learning, teaching and assessment.
