Description
Session Description
Learning technologies are often thought of in terms of their use but not their usability. Core tools used by learning technologists often suffer from poor design that impacts both the teaching and learning experiences. Yet, we have decades of HCI (Human Computer Interaction) research to draw on, as well as the expertise of user experience designers. All of these principles are easily accessible to us, we just need to take the time to learn about them and apply them. Better UX (user experience) does not mean just nicer UI. It means increased accessibility and wider inclusivity of technology and consequently learning.
This session will provide an overview of key principles of user experience design. It will cover the 10 heuristics of user experience design and how to think about them in terms of affordances. It will provide a comparative analysis of the usability of common tools used for fully digital learning by comparing Moodle and Canvas and Zoom and Big Blue Button.
The session will also provide an overview of the key literature and resources available for practitioners.
