Description
Session Description
This session is an online workshop for reflecting on what happened to higher education (HE) in 2020, after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic and the resulting lockdown that moved fast and broke things. Although the primary focus will be on ‘the Great Onlining’ (as the workshop will refer to events as), it will draw on broader perspectives by also looking backwards at other moments of disruption in HE and forwards via learning design activities.
The workshop addresses the theme of responding to complexity, by asking sectoral colleagues how we are collectively dealing with these changes to HE and the complexities of this challenge. It invites perspectives on new political and ethical considerations, and encourages open discussion about the challenges and opportunities ahead.
A key outcome for participants is to take part in generating ideas for ways ahead and to hear the perspectives of others experiencing similar circumstances. A reflection on this workshop will be published on the ALT blog, where further subsequent input will be sought.
Session content
This session will comprise of three parts.
The first part (‘Knowns Knowns’) will give reflections on one institution’s experiences and invite participants to input with theirs. In the second part (‘Known Unknowns’), small groups will consider viable and effective approaches to teaching, learning and assessment for the coming academic year, assuming ongoing impact from the pandemic and its fallout. In the final part (‘Unknown Unknowns’), the workshop returns to the notion of ‘speculative learning design’ that was introduced at ALTc 2019 (Pates, 2019), to consider possible futures for fully blended universities.
