Description
In recent times, faculty from across Ireland and the UK have enhanced their practice through appropriate and effective digital technologies usage. There are many examples of innovation in various parts of the FE and HE sector, led by various academic and learning technology champions.
The Irish Universities Association has launched a three-year project to mainstream digital in teaching, learning and assessment through an ambitious professional development programme. The aim is to move away from individual champions, towards effective engagement of all staff with digital technologies.
As part of this project, Dublin City University (DCU) specifically wants to diversify the assessment methods utilised across the university.
Faculty who have have employed traditional assessment methods for some time often have difficulty conceptualising the possibilities that digital technologies can afford. Discussions with DCU faculty have highlighted the need for a bank of technology-enhanced assessment exemplars across a range of disciplines. These exemplars can offer inspiration and guidance for those academics who lack experience in using digital assessments.
The opportunity for creating a crowd-sourced Open Educational Resource (OER) emerged from reflections on building such a resource. Drawing on the collective knowledge of the learning technology community in Ireland and the UK will strengthen the resource by broadening the scope for contributions. The ALT community can then draw on this resource to support staff engagement with digital assessment.
An edit-a-thon session at the Winter Conference would provide a unique opportunity to kickstart the creation of such a resource. The community are asked to contribute examples from their own institutions (or others if they are aware of them) where technology has enhanced assessment, or ideas that they have that may not have been implemented yet. The facilitators will then collate and curate the case studies into an Open Educational Resource on WordPress or another open platform.
