CoSector – University of London is a leading provider of innovative Digital Services including Digital Learning, Digital Research and Digital Transformation with over 50 years’ experience of delivering leading digital services to help institutions. The Centre for Distance Education (CDE) is a University of London initiative to support the development of expertise in the field of distance education, whose aim is to enhance the student experience and improve student achievement through the deployment of open and distance education.
Following the out-break of the Covid-19 worldwide pandemic in 2020, there was an urgent imperative to put in place an alternative for students taking exams in local exam centres. In a matter of weeks, CoSector put in place solutions across all its customers’ VLEs, handling over 5 million assessments, exams, practice tests, coursework and essays.
In this presentation we will share the story of how CoSector and the University of London Worldwide worked with the University of London Federation to enable over 50,000 digital assessments for its global Distance Programmes, a considerable achievement supporting over 35,000 students in over 60 different languages and 20+ time zones. CDE has undertaken an extensive evaluation of this experience which provides insights into the achievement and also informs the developing digital assessment landscape for 2021.
In sharing our story we will cover our challenges, experiences, observations and lessons learnt from student, academic and support staff perspectives, keeping the student at the heart of the process. We will share our analysis of student behaviours, experience and outcomes, as well as our operational experience. We will also share our advice on how to move forward from emergency response provision of exam centre (paper based unseen) examinations to a new standard for delivering digitally based assessments.
